Beasts of Balance Battles will add new modes, creatures and cards to the popular iPad enabled object balancing board game. Its Kickstarter campaign launched July 11th and was fully funded in just 6 hours. By Andy Robertson
If you've not seen it previously, Beast of Balance is a critically acclaimed augmented reality stacking game. It combines an iPad and three-dimensional smart animal pieces to create a game of dexterity, strategy and creation.
To succeed, players have to keep their tower and the ecosystem of their world in balance, stacking all 24 pieces and caring for the virtual beasts they create. It sounded like the perfect game for my family, and looks beautiful but no matter how much we played it it never really clicked.
It was with some excitement then that I heard about the new competitive Battles mode for Beasts of Balance. Along with new physical pieces to collect the new mode adds more depth, variety and (importantly for my family) competition.
In the Battles mode, two or three players take charge of a single region: Land, Sea or Sky. The aim is to fill your region with powerful beasts while stealing and destroying those of your opponents. Now, this is more like it.
The Battles expansion adds 16 augmented reality NFC cards into the mix. These enable players to invoke a range of effects on the digital realm. There is also a More Beasts pack that adds three new physical animals to the balancing fray: Flamingo, Chameleon and Angler Fish. There's also the first legendary beast, a hungry dragon called Magmaaargh The Cantankerous.
